Mens Jewelry
Men’s jewelry poses a different design challenge from women’s jewelry. For women, as long as the form is artistic, the jewelry stands a good chance of being appreciated. For a man though, any jewelry must proclaim manly things about the wearer. Words like masculine, solid, and strong are ones that you’ll often hear in connection with men’s jewelry.
You won’t find a man wearing a delicate ring with floral overtones, because the ring isn’t manly. It doesn’t give off an impression of strength, or solidity, it doesn’t “fit”, for lack of a better word. To create jewelry that does fit men, it requires more material than women’s jewelry uses. The reason for this is twofold. The average man is larger than the average woman in most dimensions. So if you want a ring, it has to be larger to fit around a man’s finger than a woman’s.
However, this is not the only reason it takes more. The image of strength and solidity requires a certain weightiness to it, and the only way to give that impression in a three dimensional setting is to use more material. So men’s jewelry is generally heavier than women’s jewelry is. This is by no means an unbreakable rule, just like in nature, there will be exceptions. There are some massive women’s pieces out there that amass their weight simply by covering a lot of area, such as a tiara or multi-strand necklace.
